What Do the Letters on the Ignition Switch Mean?

The ignition switch has four positions: LOCK, ACC, ON, and START. It also features a PUSH label indicating how the switch is operated.

Ignition Switch
Ignition Switch
LOCK
This position locks the steering column. Insert the ignition key into the switch to unlock it.
ACC
This position supplies power to the vehicle’s accessory circuits. It is typically used to operate accessories such as the radio and cigarette lighter without running the engine.
ON
This is the normal operating position. Once the engine starts, the switch stays at ON to supply power to the engine and other vehicle systems.
START
This position is used to start the engine. When the ignition switch is turned to START, the starter motor engages and cranks the engine by turning the crankshaft, allowing the engine to start.
PUSH
The PUSH label indicates that the lock button must be pressed while turning the ignition switch.

Important Reminder

When starting the engine, do not hold the ignition switch in the START position for too long. Normally, cranking the engine for approximately 3 seconds is sufficient. Prolonged cranking can place excessive stress on the starter motor and may damage the starter or other components of the starting system.

Modern vehicles are often well-insulated, making engine noise and vibration hard to detect at idle. Some drivers may thus attempt to restart the engine even after it has already started.

Attempting to start an engine that is already running can damage the starter motor because the engine and starter motor rotate at very different speeds. For this reason, check the tachometer before attempting a restart. If the tachometer reads approximately 700–800 rpm, the engine has started and is idling normally.

If your vehicle is equipped with a push-button start system, simply press the START button to start the engine.
