What Is a Brake Drum

The brake drum is the metal cylinder that rotates with the wheel. It is made of cast iron and is designed to handle high heat from friction. The inner surface is machined smooth so the brake shoes can make consistent contact. The drum does not wear as fast as the shoes because it is harder. Brake drums can last up to 200,000 miles. They are one of the most durable drum brake components.

What Is a Brake Shoe

The brake shoe is a curved metal piece with friction material bonded or riveted to it. The friction material presses against the drum to create stopping force. Brake shoes wear faster than the drum because the friction material is softer by design. Shoes typically need replacement every 30,000 to 70,000 miles depending on driving habits and conditions.

Brake Drum vs Brake Shoe: Key Differences

Wear rate. Brake shoes wear out much faster than the drum. The friction material on the shoes is designed to be the sacrificial layer. The drum is harder and lasts longer.

Function. The drum provides the friction surface. The shoe carries the friction material and presses against the drum. They are two separate parts that depend on each other.

Replacement. When replacing brake shoes, inspect the drum for scoring, cracks, or out-of-round wear. If the drum is damaged, it needs resurfacing or replacement. Always replace shoes on both sides at the same time.

Cost. Brake shoes are cheaper to replace than the drum. But if the drum is worn past the manufacturer specified thickness, the cost of a new drum adds to the repair bill.

When to Replace Each

Replace brake shoes when the friction material is below 1/8 inch thick. Replace the brake drum if it has deep grooves, cracks, blue discoloration from overheating, or if it is out of round. A mechanic can measure the drum inner diameter to check if it is still within specification.
