Common Car Dashboard Warning Lights: Symbols, Meanings, and Causes

Learn the common causes and meanings of car dashboard warning lights and what they mean for your vehicle.

ABS Warning Light

The ABS warning light is usually marked with the letters “ABS.” When the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position, the ABS system performs an automatic self-check, and the warning light will come on. If the system is functioning normally, the light should turn off after a few seconds.

If the ABS warning light stays on, suddenly comes on while driving, or does not illuminate at all when the ignition is turned to the “ON” position, it may indicate a problem with the ABS system. The vehicle should be inspected to identify and address the cause.

Door Open Warning Light

The door open warning light comes on when a door is open or not fully closed. In some vehicles, a warning chime may also sound.

After the engine is turned off, if the ignition switch is in the “LOCK” position and the key has not been removed, opening any door may cause the warning light to come on. This reminds you not to leave the key inside the vehicle.

Brake System Warning Light

The brake system warning light comes on when the ignition switch is in the “ON” or “START” position. If the parking brake is released, the light should turn off automatically after the vehicle is started. If the parking brake is engaged, the light will remain illuminated.

If the brake warning light suddenly comes on while driving, stop the vehicle safely and check the brake system. On some vehicles, the warning light may also come on when the brake fluid level in the reservoir is too low.

Oil Pressure Warning Light

Under normal conditions, the engine oil pressure warning light comes on when the ignition is switched on and turns off after the engine starts.

If the oil pressure warning light remains on while the engine is running, it may indicate a serious engine problem. Stop the vehicle safely and check the engine oil level and condition as soon as possible.

Tire Pressure Warning Light

The tire pressure warning light comes on when the tire pressure is too low or otherwise outside the recommended range. When this happens, safely pull over and check the tires.

If there is no obvious sign of a flat or significantly low tire, you can reset the tire pressure monitoring system according to the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. If the warning light comes on again after driving for a while, it may indicate that one of the tires has a pressure problem. Have the tire pressure checked and repair or inflate the affected tire as needed.

Engine Warning Light

The engine warning light usually shows a simplified outline of an engine and may also include the word “CHECK.” When you start the vehicle, the warning light typically flashes for a few seconds and then turns off automatically.

If the light does not flash when you start the vehicle or remains on while driving, it may indicate a problem with the engine or its related systems. The vehicle should be inspected as soon as possible.

ESP Warning Light

Under normal conditions, the ESP warning light should turn off automatically within a few seconds after the engine starts.

If the ESP warning light flashes, it usually means that the ESP system is actively working to improve the vehicle’s stability and control.

If the ESP warning light stays on, the ESP system may have been switched off using the ESP button. In this case, pressing the button again may reactivate the system and turn off the warning light.

On some vehicles, the ESP system may automatically reactivate above a certain speed even if it has been manually switched off. The exact speed and operating conditions vary by vehicle.

If the ESP button has not been pressed but the warning light remains on, it may indicate a fault in the ESP system. The vehicle should be inspected by a qualified technician.

Charging Warning Light

The charging warning light comes on when the ignition is switched to the “ON” position and should turn off automatically after the engine starts.

If the charging warning light remains on while the engine is running, it may indicate a problem with the vehicle’s charging system. First, check whether the alternator drive belt is loose, slipping, or disconnected. If the problem persists, have the charging system inspected by a qualified technician.

Seat Belt Warning Light

The seat belt warning light may flash during the vehicle’s self-check when you start the engine.

If someone is not wearing a seat belt while the vehicle is moving, especially in the front seats, the warning light may remain illuminated or flash. Some vehicles may also sound a warning chime.

SRS Airbag Warning Light

The SRS airbag warning light comes on when there is a problem with the vehicle’s supplemental restraint system (SRS). When the ignition is switched to the “ON” position, the warning light normally flashes for a few seconds and then turns off automatically.

If the warning light continues to flash or remains illuminated, it may indicate a fault in the SRS system. The vehicle should be inspected by a qualified technician as soon as possible.
