Step 1. Park on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
Step 2. Turn the steering wheel all the way to one side. This exposes the brake components through the wheel openings.
Step 3. Spray brake cleaner directly onto the rotor and caliper through the wheel openings. Use the straw attachment for precise aim. Cover all visible brake parts.
Step 4. Let the cleaner dry. It evaporates in seconds. Wipe off any excess with a lint-free cloth if needed.
Step 5. Turn the wheel to the other side and repeat.
When This Method Works Best
Using brake cleaner without removing the tire is good for removing brake dust and light grime. It is not a substitute for a full brake service. If you need to inspect the brake pads, measure rotor thickness, or service the calipers, remove the wheel for full access.
Limitations
This method does not reach the inner brake components. Drum brakes are harder to clean this way because the drum encloses the brake shoes. For drum brakes, removing the wheel and drum is the better approach.
Clean your brakes every 10,000 to 15,000 miles or whenever you notice squeaking or visible brake dust buildup.
