Brake pads and brake shoes both create friction to stop the vehicle. But they are different parts used in different brake systems.
Brake Pads
Brake pads are used in disc brake systems. They are flat pieces of friction material bonded to a metal backing plate. The caliper presses the pads against both sides of the brake rotor. Brake pads are visible through the wheel spokes on most cars. They are easier to inspect and replace than brake shoes. Most modern cars use brake pads on at least the front wheels.
Brake Shoes
Brake shoes are used in drum brake systems. They are curved pieces of friction material riveted or bonded to a metal shoe. The shoes press outward against the inside of the brake drum. Brake shoes are not visible without removing the drum. They are more complex to service than brake pads. Brake shoes are commonly found on the rear axle of budget-friendly cars and older vehicles.

Location. Brake pads are in disc brake systems. Brake shoes are in drum brake systems.
Movement. Pads clamp inward against a rotor. Shoes push outward against a drum.
Visibility. Pads are visible through the wheel. Shoes are hidden inside the drum.

Which Lasts Longer
Brake shoes typically last longer than brake pads. The friction material on shoes has a larger surface area and wears more slowly. Shoes on rear drum brakes can last 100,000 miles or more. Brake pads on front disc brakes typically last 30,000 to 60,000 miles.
