Stopping Power
Front brakes handle 60 to 90 percent of the braking force. When you brake, the vehicle weight shifts forward. The front tires get more grip and the front brakes work harder. Rear brakes provide the remaining 10 to 40 percent of stopping power. They support the front brakes and keep the vehicle stable during deceleration.
Why Front Brakes Do More Work
Weight transfer is the main reason. When you press the brake pedal, the car momentum shifts forward. The front suspension compresses and the rear rises. This puts most of the braking load on the front axle. That is why front brake pads and rotors are larger and thicker than rear ones. They need to absorb more heat and friction.
Wear and Replacement
Front brakes wear out faster than rear brakes because they do most of the work. Front brake pads typically last 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Rear brake pads last 50,000 to 80,000 miles. If you hear squealing or grinding from the front, check the pads first. You will likely replace front brakes two or three times before the rear brakes need service.
Brake Types
Front brakes almost always use disc brakes because they handle heat better. Rear brakes can be either disc or drum brakes. Many cars use disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear to balance cost and performance. Drum brakes on the rear are sufficient because the rear axle handles less braking force.
Can You Replace Front and Rear at the Same Time
You do not need to replace front and rear brakes at the same time. Replace them as needed based on wear. Most drivers replace front brakes more often than rear brakes. Always replace brake pads on both sides of the same axle at the same time to maintain balanced braking.
