Walk through any truck market in Africa, Southeast Asia, or the Middle East and you’ll see them: Fuso Fighters with odometers that have rolled over twice, still hauling loads every day. The 6D14 and 6D16 engines are legendary for a reason. The chassis is overbuilt for what most operators throw at it.
But the Fighters that make it to 500,000 km don’t get there by accident. They get there because someone made a series of right decisions — about maintenance, about parts, about driving habits — over years of ownership. Here’s what those decisions look like.

1. Engine: The Heart of a Long Life
The 6D and 6M series engines are mechanically simple — no complex electronics, no emissions systems to fail. That simplicity is their greatest asset, but only if you respect it.
Oil Changes: The Single Most Important Habit
- Change engine oil every 5,000–7,500 km — not 10,000, not 15,000. In dusty environments, hot climates, or with heavy loads, the oil works harder. Change it sooner.
- Use 15W-40 diesel-specific oil with a minimum API rating of CI-4. Cheap oil is tempting. Cheap oil also leaves deposits that turn into sludge that blocks oil passages that starve bearings. The math is simple.
- Change the oil filter with every oil change. Never just change the oil and leave the old filter. A clogged filter bypasses and sends unfiltered oil through your engine.
- Check oil level weekly. The 6D16 in particular can consume oil as it ages. Running a liter low for a month is running a liter low for 5,000 km. That’s bearing damage accumulating silently.
Fuel System: Clean Fuel = Clean Combustion
- Replace the fuel filter every 10,000 km — or sooner if you’re buying fuel from roadside drums. Bad diesel is the number one killer of injection pumps. A new injection pump costs more than a lifetime of fuel filters.
- Drain the water separator weekly. Water in diesel destroys injectors. The water separator exists for a reason — use it.
- Use a pre-filter if your fuel supply is questionable. A $50 inline pre-filter can save a $2,000 injection pump. This is not a tough decision.
Cooling System: Heat Is the Silent Killer
- Flush the cooling system every 2 years or 100,000 km. Old coolant becomes acidic and eats through head gaskets, cylinder liners, and radiator cores.
- Replace the thermostat at 200,000 km. A stuck-closed thermostat cooks your engine in minutes. A stuck-open thermostat prevents the engine from reaching operating temperature, causing incomplete combustion, fuel dilution of oil, and accelerated wear.
- Check the fan clutch. A failed fan clutch is hard to diagnose until the engine overheats on a long climb. If the fan spins freely by hand with the engine hot, the clutch is dead.
- Inspect hoses and belts every service. A burst radiator hose on a loaded truck on a highway is a tow truck bill and a potential head gasket job. Replace hoses at 150,000 km — don’t wait for them to fail.
Valve Adjustment: The Forgotten Service
The 6D and 6M engines use mechanical valve trains. Valve clearances change over time. Too tight = burned valves. Too loose = noisy operation, reduced power, and accelerated camshaft wear. Adjust valves every 40,000–50,000 km. It’s a two-hour job that prevents a multi-thousand-dollar top-end rebuild.
2. Drivetrain: Transfer Power, Don’t Waste It
Clutch: The Part That Separates Professionals from Amateurs
- Don’t ride the clutch. Foot on the clutch pedal at traffic lights? Release bearing grinding away. Slipping the clutch to hold on a hill? Clutch disc burning up. Both habits can cut clutch life by 50%.
- Replace the complete clutch kit, not just the disc. If you’re paying for 8 hours of labor to access the clutch, replace the pressure plate, disc, release bearing, and pilot bearing. Doing half the job saves $200 today and costs $1,000 in labor when the release bearing fails next year.
- Adjust clutch free play regularly. A clutch without free play is constantly partially disengaged — slipping and wearing. A clutch with too much free play doesn’t disengage fully — grinding gears. Both are preventable.
Gearbox & Differential: Oil Changes Matter Here Too
- Change gearbox oil every 50,000 km. Use the correct grade — SAE 90 or 80W-90 gear oil for most Fighter transmissions. The oil doesn’t just lubricate; it cools the gears and carries away metal particles.
- Change differential oil on the same schedule. The differential works harder than the gearbox — it’s under constant load. Old oil loses its extreme-pressure additives. Without them, gear teeth wear exponentially.
- Check U-joints for play at every service. A failing U-joint vibrates, which damages the transmission output bearing and differential pinion bearing. A $40 U-joint can cause $2,000 in collateral damage if ignored.
3. Brakes & Wheel Ends: The Parts That Stop You and Keep You Rolling
Brake System
- Replace brake drums before they reach the maximum wear diameter. Running drums beyond spec is illegal in most countries and dangerous everywhere. A drum that’s too thin can crack under hard braking. You don’t want to find out at the bottom of a hill.
- Use quality brake linings. Cheap linings wear faster, fade sooner, and produce more heat. Heat transfers to the drum, the hub, and eventually the wheel bearings. A bad brake lining choice cascades through the entire wheel end.
- Drain air tanks daily. For air-brake Fighters, water in the air system causes corrosion in brake chambers, valves, and lines. It also freezes in cold climates. The daily drain is a 30-second habit that prevents a system-wide overhaul.
- Replace the air dryer cartridge annually. The air dryer removes moisture before it enters the system. A saturated cartridge stops working. You won’t notice — until your brake valve freezes or rusts through.
Wheel Bearings & Hubs
- Repack wheel bearings every 50,000–80,000 km. This is the service that most operators skip — and the one that causes the most expensive failures. A dry bearing seizes. A seized bearing spins on the spindle, destroying the hub and potentially the axle.
- Replace hub seals every time you repack bearings. A reused seal is a leaking seal. A leaking seal lets grease out and water in. Both ruin bearings.
- Use the correct bearing preload. Too tight = bearing overheats. Too loose = bearing hammers itself to death. A few minutes with a torque wrench and a dial indicator is the difference between bearings that last 300,000 km and bearings that fail at 80,000.
4. Suspension & Steering: The Parts That Take the Beating
- Grease all grease points every 5,000 km. The Fighter has grease nipples on the king pins, tie rod ends, drag link, spring pins, and U-joints. Every single one of them needs grease regularly. A grease gun costs $30. A king pin replacement costs $500 in parts and a full day of labor.
- Check king pin play at every brake service. Jack up the front axle and check for vertical movement. Any detectable play means the king pin and bushings are worn. Replace them as a kit — don’t just do the bushings and hope the pin is still good.
- Replace spring pins and shackle bushings when they wear. Metal-on-metal contact here wears the spring eye and shackle bracket. Once those are ovaled out, you’re replacing the spring pack or welding the bracket — both far more expensive than the bushings you should have replaced earlier.
- Replace worn shock absorbers. Worn shocks don’t just make the ride uncomfortable. They increase braking distance, cause uneven tire wear, and accelerate wear on every suspension component. Shocks are cheap insurance.
5. Driving Habits That Add Kilometers
You can follow every maintenance schedule in this guide and still destroy a truck with bad driving habits. The driver’s right foot is the single biggest variable in vehicle longevity.
- Warm up the engine before loading it. Start the engine, let it idle for 2–3 minutes, then drive gently for the first 10 minutes. Cold oil doesn’t flow. Cold metal doesn’t have the right clearances. Loading a cold engine is how you score cylinder walls.
- Cool down after hard driving. After a long climb or heavy load, let the engine idle for 2–3 minutes before shutting down. The turbocharger spins at 100,000+ RPM and gets extremely hot. Shutting down immediately cooks the oil in the turbo bearing, leaving carbon deposits that destroy the bearing over time.
- Don’t overload. The Fighter is tough, but it has limits. Running 2 tons over GVW every day cuts brake life by 40%, spring life by 50%, and engine life by who knows how much. The extra load revenue disappears into the repair bills.
- Use engine braking, not just the service brakes. On long descents, the exhaust brake is your best friend. It saves brake linings and prevents brake fade. A Fighter coming down a mountain pass in the wrong gear is a Fighter heading for a brake fire.
- Shift smoothly. Forcing gears, grinding synchros, and dumping the clutch shorten transmission and driveline life. The Fighter’s gearbox is strong, but it’s not indestructible. Treat it with respect.
