You do not need to replace front and rear brakes at the same time. Front brakes wear faster than rear brakes, so they are usually replaced on different schedules.
Why They Wear at Different Rates
Front brakes handle 60 to 90 percent of the braking force because weight shifts forward during braking. This means front brake pads wear out sooner. Rear brakes handle less force and last longer. If you replace both axles at the same time, you are replacing rear pads that still have plenty of life left.
When to Replace Each
Replace front brake pads when the friction material is 3 mm or less. This typically happens every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Replace rear brake pads when they reach the same thickness, which is usually every 50,000 to 80,000 miles. In most cases, you will replace front brakes two or three times before the rears need service.
Replace Both on the Same Axle
Even though front and rear are not replaced at the same time, always replace brake pads on both sides of the same axle at the same time. If you replace only the left front pad and not the right front, the braking will be uneven. The car may pull to one side during braking.
When It Makes Sense to Do Both
If both front and rear pads are close to the wear limit, replacing them at the same time saves a trip to the shop. If you are buying a used car with unknown brake history, replacing all four at once gives you a fresh start. Otherwise, replace each axle as needed.
