A brake switch is a small electrical component mounted on the brake pedal mechanism. It tells your car when you are pressing the brake. Understanding what a brake switch is and how it works helps you diagnose problems with your brake lights, cruise control, and gear shift.
What Is a Brake Switch
The brake switch, also called a brake light switch or brake sensor, is a spring-loaded two-position switch. It has two states: ON and OFF. When you press the brake pedal, the switch closes and sends a signal to the ECU. When you release the pedal, the switch opens and the signal stops.
Despite its small size, the brake switch controls multiple systems. Besides turning on the brake lights, it also disengages cruise control, allows the gear shift to move out of Park in automatic transmissions, and helps the engine control unit manage fuel delivery during deceleration.
How the Brake Switch Works
The brake switch is a simple electric switch with contact terminals and a spring. When you press the brake pedal, the spring pushes the contact terminals together, completing the circuit. This sends a signal to the ECU. When you lift your foot off the pedal, the spring returns to its original position, the contacts open, and the signal cuts off.
The brake switch is located on the brake pedal. You can find it by looking under the dashboard above the brake pedal. It is usually clipped or screwed into place.
What the Brake Switch Controls
Brake lights. The most basic function. When the brake switch detects pedal pressure, it turns on the rear brake lights to warn drivers behind you.
Cruise control. The brake switch signals the ECU to disengage cruise control the moment you touch the brake pedal.
Shift interlock. In automatic transmissions, the brake switch must send a signal before the gear shift can move from Park to other positions.
Fuel management. The ECU uses the brake switch signal to adjust fuel injection during deceleration, which improves fuel economy.
Emergency brake assist. Some vehicles use the brake switch signal to activate brake assist systems during emergency stops.
